Weather Reeks Havoc on Kuwait

(Rain In Kuwait)

(Dust Storm In Kuwait)

Weather in Kuwait is generally much like this: Fall (September-December): hot temperatures well above 90F, with bouts of heavy, thick, dripping humidity; Winter (December through March): warm to cool, which can be (but not very often) cold, with rare rain storms that blow in and out again quickly, often in a few hour time period; Spring (April-May) swiftly brings in summer with heat ever intensifying, and dust storms; and at last, Summer (June-August): daily temperatures well above 110F and never a cloud in the sky.

Over the past two weeks, the weather in Kuwait has resembled what most would see in all four seasons, but appearing in a 24 hour time span. Although this time of year is known for it’s humidity, dust, and introduction of the summer heat, residents of Kuwait have seen weather that is much like this and oh so much more.

On April 13th, the day started out with sun, humidity and temperatures in the mid 80’s. Mid morning to afternoon brought deep, dark clouds, rain, hail (which comes once every few years in Kuwait), thunder and lightning. Residents and foreigners were fascinated by the ice falling from the sky, and thankful for the quick change in weather, which brought cool temperatures and crisp clean air.

For you Midwesterners, this may seem like nothing at all, just another day in the life of wilderness. However, when it rains in Kuwait, the sewage systems and drains cannot work fast enough to swallow the water. This causes flooding in underpasses on main freeways, and traffic jams beyond your dreams. Not to mention the wonderfully smart people who think they can just gun-it and ram right through that knee deep water with their “smart” cars. This chaos stays around long after the 30-mintue rains shower subsides. Rush-hour nightmare begins and what used to be a 15-mintue ride home with the kids from school becomes an hour long tortuous nightmare. Thank goodness we have a DVD Player.
