What makes a blog a blog? As students of the computer generation, the term “Journal” has taken on a new twist. The Blog, better known as the shared online journal, has replaced the old pen and paper, under your pillow with lock and key, Journal. When thinking back to my high school years, I can remember the first Blog noted on television in the famous sitcom “Doogie Houser, M.D.”. At the end of each episode, Doogie sat at his computer to write in his electronic journal.
As an adult student in the Middle East, I have seen the computer age taking some time to catch on, but the blog has made it’s mark here. The most recent, widely publicized blog “Banat Riyadh” (translated in English as “Daughters of Riyadh”), was a controversial blog published each Friday in Saudia Arabia, following the lives of four girls growing up in a male dominated kingdom. Although controversial, its popularity pushed for publication into a book in both Arabic and English.
Whatever the subject, what makes a blog so exciting and different from the ordinary journal, is the digital addition of text, images, sound and video. Not only is a blog a Journal of personal opinions, but other people comment can comment on these subjects, adding several different sides to “hot topics”. However, to find, and comment on the “hot topics” I am looking for, has become my biggest challenge. I am looking forward to learning more about how to organize the blogs I want to follow, and sort them by subject matter.
